Caesalpinia pulcherrima, Red Bird of Paradise, is a fast-growing, ornamental shrub or small tree native to the tropics and subtropics of the Americas. It typically grows 6 to 12 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded, airy canopy with fine, feathery, bipinnate leaves that give the plant a delicate texture. The most striking feature is its vibrant, showy flowers, which are bright red to orange with long, protruding stamens, blooming in large clusters throughout the warm months. These blossoms are highly attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. The plant produces flat, brown seed pods after flowering. Red Bird of Paradise thrives in hot, sunny locations with well-drained soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping, tropical gardens, and as a striking hedge or accent plant. It is low-maintenance, tolerant of pruning, and adds a bold splash of color to arid and semi-arid landscapes. Zones 8-11
Germination
To germinate Caesalpinia pulcherrima seeds, start by scarifying the hard seed coat using a file or sandpaper, or by soaking the seeds in hot (not boiling) water for 12 to 24 hours to improve water absorption. After treatment, plant the seeds about 1/2 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix, such as a blend of sand and compost or cactus soil. Keep the soil lightly moist and place the container in a warm, bright location with temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Germination usually occurs within 1 to 3 weeks under optimal conditions. Once the seedlings develop a few true leaves, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the ground in a sunny location. Red Bird of Paradise prefers full sun and thrives in hot, dry conditions with minimal watering once established, making it suitable for drought-tolerant and tropical landscapes.
