Tomato 'Brandywine' is one of the most beloved heirloom tomatoes, famous for its rich flavor and impressive, old-fashioned size. It’s been around since the late 1800s and remains a favorite among gardeners who appreciate homegrown taste over supermarket looks. Brandywine tomatoes are big, juicy, and full of real tomato flavor. The plants grow as sprawling vines that keep producing through the season.
The fruits are large — often over 1 pound each — with a slightly flattened, ribbed shape and a pink to rosy-red skin. Inside, the flesh is dense, creamy, and packed with an intense tomato flavor that balances sweetness and acidity. Because of their thin skins and soft texture, Brandywine tomatoes are best used fresh rather than stored. They’re perfect for slicing thick onto sandwiches, layering into salads, or just enjoying plain with a sprinkle of salt.
Compared to faster-growing hybrid tomatoes, Brandywine takes a little more patience. The vines grow tall — usually 6 to 8 feet — and need sturdy cages or stakes to support their weight. You might notice that the leaves look a bit different too; they’re broader and smoother, often described as “potato-leafed,” which helps distinguish Brandywine from other tomato varieties at a glance.
Even though Brandywine is grown mostly for its famous fruit, the plant itself has a lush, informal beauty that softens vegetable gardens and patios. If you can give it a full season and plenty of sun, it’ll repay you with some of the best-tasting tomatoes you’ll ever grow — a true reminder of why heirloom plants are so treasured.

Needs full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours a day, to grow strong vines and produce good-sized fruits. Without enough light, the plants stay small and struggle to set fruit.
Water deeply when the top inch of soil feels dry, aiming for steady moisture without soggy soil. Mulching helps hold in moisture and keeps the roots cooler during hot spells.
Grows well in average outdoor humidity but needs good air circulation to stay healthy. Crowded, wet conditions can invite fungal diseases like blight.
Likes it warm, ideally between 70–85°F. Since it’s sensitive to frost, only plant it outdoors once nighttime temperatures stay reliably above freezing. While tomatoes are generally grown as annuals and can be cultivated in USDA zones 3 through 11, the key factor is the length of the growing season and the average last frost date in your specific area. In cooler zones like 3 and 4, gardeners often start seeds indoors and use season-extending techniques to ensure a successful harvest.
Prefers rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0 to 6.8). Adding compost or aged manure helps fuel strong vines and lots of flowers.
Feed about once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer, or use a tomato-specific formula that's a little higher in phosphorus to boost flowering. Too much nitrogen will make the plant leafy but slow to fruit.
Ripe tomatoes are safe to eat, but the green parts — stems, leaves, and unripe green fruits — can be toxic if eaten. Keep plants where pets and kids can’t chew on them.
