Desert Surprise Kalanchoe, botanically listed as Kalanchoe humilis ‘Desert Surprise’, is a live succulent plant selected for its distinctive form and ornamental appeal. Natural color, size, form, and presentation may vary slightly with season, maturity, and growing conditions.

Morphological Characteristics

Kalanchoe humilis ‘Desert Surprise’ is a striking succulent shrub from the Crassulaceae family, native to East Africa. This cultivar is prized for its bold, variegated leaf patterns and upright, architectural form, making it a standout specimen in succulent collections.

It features large, fleshy leaves that are typically oblong or paddle-shaped, arranged oppositely along upright stems. The leaf surface is pale green to bluish-gray, dramatically streaked or blotched with deep purple to maroon markings. These patterns become more vibrant in bright light and vary among individual plants, adding to their unique appeal.

Mature plants can reach up to 30–60 cm (12–24 inches) tall and develop multiple branches from the base. During the flowering season—typically in summer—it produces clusters of small, tubular, pale green to pinkish-lavender flowers atop tall inflorescences that rise above the foliage.

Growth Habits

Kalanchoe humilis is a fast-growing, shrubby succulent with a loosely upright form. It thrives in dry, warm environments and may spread over time via branching stems and basal shoots. Its upright habit and bold leaf markings make it excellent for use as a focal point in succulent gardens or large containers.

Maintenance Points

Lighting: Prefers bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages vivid leaf markings and sturdy stems. Indoors, use a sunny windowsill or supplemental grow lights.

Watering: Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Water less frequently in winter months.

Soil: Use fast-draining cactus or succulent soil. Amend with pumice or perlite for added aeration.

Temperature: Best grown in temperatures between 18–29°C (65–85°F). Protect from frost—minimum safe temperature is around 5°C (41°F).

Fertilization: Feed with diluted succulent fertilizer once a month during active growth (spring and summer). No feeding needed in fall and winter.

Potting: Use a medium-depth pot with drainage holes. Repot every 2–3 years or when root-bound.

Humidity: Prefers dry, well-ventilated environments. High humidity can encourage fungal problems.

Reproduction Method

  1. Stem Cuttings:

• Use clean scissors to take 10–15 cm (4–6 inch) stem tips.

• Allow cuttings to callus for 2–3 days before planting in dry soil.

• Water sparingly until roots develop.

  1. Offsets (Basal Shoots):

• Gently remove side shoots that develop at the base.

• Let dry for 1–2 days, then plant in dry, well-draining soil.

• Water lightly after a few days.

  1. Seeds:

• Rarely used but possible. Sow on the surface of moist soil and cover lightly. Keep warm and provide indirect light.

Additional Tips

Pest Control: Monitor for mealybugs and spider mites. Use neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Prevention: Avoid overwatering and ensure excellent airflow. Keep water off leaves to reduce fungal risk.

Pruning: Trim back leggy stems to encourage bushier growth. Remove spent flowers and dried leaves regularly.

Display: Perfect for larger pots, desert-style landscapes, or mixed arrangements with muted or silver-toned succulents. Provides strong contrast in both form and color.

Safety Note: Like many Kalanchoes, it may be toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.

Soft "cooling" case.
Yes it is very cool when you lay on it. It doesn't stay cold though. Within a minute or 2 to whatever your temp is.

Great for hair and skin. Great buy.
These pillow cases are great for my hair and skin. They look good, hold up well in the washer and dryer, and the price is great. They are cooling. Of course I wish they could be more cooling, but honestly I'm not sure that's even possible. Great pillow cases. Already bought more for other heads. Would buy again.

Hot hot hot. Side sleepers will hate it
At first touch, these are the coldest pillowcases I own … but only for seconds. Once you actually lay on them, within seconds they adjust to your body temp, the heat feels trapped, my head begins to feel hotter than before I laid down - which has in turn caused me loathe these pillow cases. I hate that I have missed the return window. Would never buy again, would never recommend. My satin ones aren’t even this hot! I gave them the good ole 30-day try. Side sleepers - if you are like me and sleep on your side with arm tucked under pillow - flipping this pillow over in hopes of a cold side - forget it, it’s already hot from your arm.

Nice but dissapointing
So it sometimes stays cool but if it’s under a blanket and you have your body on it at all it will get warm but the spots you don’t use will get cool sometimes. I am very disappointed in the material though because it’s like my dry skin scratched the pillow case all over which makes me question it and I don’t think I would buy again.
