The Platycerium willinckii 'Jade Girl' is a standout within the world of epiphytic ferns. This rare cultivar is known for its soft, silvery-green leaves that gracefully wave down like antlers. She is a popular species among plant lovers looking for a botanical work of art for the wall.
Origin
Platycerium-species is native to tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, Africa and Australia, where it grows on trees without harming them. The cultivar 'Jade Girl' is a special selection of Platycerium willinckii, a species native to Indonesia, and has been carefully bred for its distinct shape and elegant leaf structure.
Characteristics
What 'Jade Girl' distinguishes it from other staghorn ferns is its exceptionally delicate leaf growth. The long, downward growing fertile leaves (spore-bearing leaves) have a characteristic, narrow shape with a soft jade green color and a slight silver haze. This gives the plant an almost ethereal appearance. The shield leaves form a protective shield at the base that cures over time, contributing to its distinctive appearance.
This cultivar grows relatively compact, which makes it perfect for mounting on wood panels or bark - a popular way to present it in its natural epiphytic form.
Care
The Platycerium willinckii 'Jade Girl' requires an airy, well-drained environment and likes high humidity. It thrives best in bright, indirect light and should be allowed to dry out completely between waterings. Because this species grows naturally on trees, it is ideally hung or mounted rather than placed in a pot. Water by misting the back of the plant or by submerging the root base for a few minutes. During the growing season (spring and summer), a dilute epiphyte fertilizer can be given monthly.
