Why This Watch Matters

This is a simple Certina dress watch in 18k yellow gold, an excellent example from a brand in the vintage world that is growing in popularity by the day.

The Full Story

Certina was originally founded by the Kurth brothers in 1888, and the manufacturer first produced movements, and later watches, under the name Grana. The name was changed to Certina in 1939, and they quickly started producing automatic watches in the 1940s, eventually introducing the DS series in 1959. The DS divers, a few of which we have been happy to offer in the past, have taken hold in the larger vintage collecting universe over the past few years. On the back of the DS, Certina in general is growing in popularity as collectors continue to be impressed by the reliability and solid build quality. Modern Certina is having a bit of a moment as well here at the HODINKEE as the brand recently returned to the U.S. market exclusively through the Shop.

With that growing appreciation, more attention has come to the lesser known Certina watches as collectors come to understand the build quality of the brand. Lesser known watches like this humble dress watch in 18k yellow gold. Whereas other brands that remain under-the-radar in the vintage world can sometimes disappoint in build quality, Certina impresses even the most seasoned of collectors. You can feel the difference right in your hand.

While the case is simple with four sharp lugs, this Certina's dial and hands are stunning and extremely well made. You can see the attention to detail in the black paint portion of the hands which ties into the black color within each hour marker as well as the simple vertically brushed finish. We are continually attracted to these non-lume watches as they can be worn a bit more worry-free. A simple knock on the table or door jam will not lead to damage to those pesky and fragile lume plots.

Like Cole P says "Always read the caseback." Turning this Certina around we find an engraving depicting The Three Crowns of Sweden, the national emblem, and reading "FÖR NIT OCH REDLIGHET I RIKETS TJÄNST" or, translated from Swedish, "for zeal and honesty in service of the kingdom" we can assume this watch was a gift given by a member of the Kingdom of Sweden to a great citizen or friend of the state.

This example is in really excellent condition with some light patina that presents nicely. The watch is even fitted to a Certina black leather strap with a signed gold-tone tang buckle.

What We Love And What You Should Know

Things We Love:

- Like NOS condition with Certina strap and tang buckle
- Brushed finish on dial
- Kingdom of Sweden engraving on caseback

Things To Know:

- Light scratches and patina on case
- Some very light wear to the strap

This Certina is in excellent, honest condition. The case has some light scratches and warm patina but appears unpolished with sharp lines. The caseback has scratches and shows some wear. The caseback engraving is crisp and deep, it is engraved "FÖR NIT OCH REDLIGHET I RIKETS TJÄNST." The case number between the lugs at 12 o'clock is crisp and visible. The hallmark between the lugs at 6 o'clock is crisp and visible.

The dial is in great condition with a light patina throughout. There is a starburst pattern to the dial and patina. The applied hour markers, applied Certina logo, and hands have developed patina.

The dial, crown, case, and movement are signed by Certina. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.

Fuzzballs get wearing once
Color: Black, Size: X-Large
Very smart to wear, but the quality is terrible so after one wash the collar start fraying and fuzzballs start forming. Very disappointing.

Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking
Color: Green/Black
I love this watch despite the fact that it is really a toy. I love the look of the watch, I love how lite the weight of the watch is on my wrist, and it really does keep good time if you manage the solar charge properly. Other than looking cool on your wrist, this watch has absolutely no functions other than time keeping. The black plastic bezel is molded into the case and does not turn, so don't plan on using that. The watch has no light, the dial numbers are non-luminous and the hands are very limited in terms of luminosity. No buttons. All you can do is adjust the time and date by pulling out what used to be a winding stem in the good old days. The small tag on the strap with Geographic coordinates shown on it indicate the location of the old Timex manufacturing facility (SW of Waterbury, CT). I have a nice ledge at my bedroom window and it gets good western sun for a good part of the day regardless of the time of year. On this ledge you will find a half dozen solar powered watches (mostly Casio) properly aligned to maximize the charge they may receive each day. Note that the description for this Timex watch specifically states that a lightbulb won't charge this watch. You need direct sunlight for several hours if you want to get more than a 3-week charge into this watch. So, I'll leave you with a couple of tips, my friends; 1.) If you are looking for a first watch to give your outdoorsy oriented Son or Daughter, then give them this one. Why? Because it is cool looking, fairly well built, and it actually works, 2.) After you receive your Timex watch, be sure to keep the display mount it is packaged with. It makes a great fixture to mount your watch on for charging and allows you to maximize the position of the solar cells on the dial so that you can optimize charging time. Have Fun! Jimmy

Excellent value, flawless performance for well over a year and no signs of quitting.
Color: Green/Black
Excellent value, had this for well over a year and it still keeps perfect time, still water resistant. No worries about having to change batteries. Owned a fancy expensive (battery) watch once and the dept. store repair intentionally sabotaged the watch in the hopes I would purchase another from them. Yeah, good luck with that, lost my business forever. This is the 21st century, cell phones are the new time pieces, but solar is totally reliable and Timex makes it happen. Holds a charge for many months, although I prop it in a bright window for a few days every few months or so just to make sure the cells are always fully charged, although it's probably unnecessary, just being over cautious. I haven't actually experienced this watch ever running out of power even after months of use. Damn impressive, as it should be.

Good value for solar watch
Color: Black/Orange
Nice watch! It is plastic like but it is solar. No indiglo button only a little luminous on the hands so you don't want to wear it in tje dark and expect to check the time. 45mm case is good size for my wrist and the band works good also, Not too long not too short. Overall a good watch with no problems
